Osman I founds the Ottoman Empire, which grows to control Anatolia, the Balkans, the Middle East, and North Africa. Constantinople falls to Mehmed II in 1453, ending the Byzantine Empire. At its peak the Ottomans rule 20 million people across three continents for 600 years.
